Conference Objectives!

Global Issues!

The earth, unfortunately, suffers from many issues, problems, risks and scarcities due to various causes, particularly, on account of over-exploitation of natural resources. Research reports send many warning signals threatening the survival of mankind owing to depletion of natural resources, at a faster rate. Unless serious measures are introduced on a war-footing, the world and mankind might face many serious issues, in the long run. Taking into account the gravity of the situation, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) reported in 2014 that ‘greenhouse gases’ and other human activities cause, ‘global warming’. Some of the fallouts of ‘global warming’ include rising sea levels, retreat of glaciers, changing precipitation and expansion of deserts. Research reports further indicate that the other likely changes in the environment/climate might include heatwaves, droughts, ocean acidification and heavy snowfalls. Threat to food security and abandonment of populated areas due to flooding are the other negative impacts if we are not focusing on arresting these disturbing trends. An important alternative suggested by scientists and economists recommend the concept of ‘green economy’. According to a research report published in 2007, the concentration of CO2 and methane have increased by 36% to 148% since 1750.

Green Economy! A Sine Quo Non!!

The United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) defines the term, ‘Green Economy’ as follows: ‘A green economy is one that results in improved human well-being and social equity, while significantly reducing environmental risks and ecological scarcities’.

A ‘green economy’ helps sustaining and advancing economic, environmental and social well-being of a society. In a nutshell, a ‘green economy’ is one whose growth in income and employment is driven by public and private investments that reduce carbon emissions and pollution, enhance energy and resource efficiency and prevent the loss of biodiversity and ecosystem services.

Green economy and the related initiatives place greater emphasis on low-carbon, resource efficient and socially inclusive programs to ensure that existing natural resources do not deplete and create risks and hazards to people.

A ‘green economy’ exhibits the following characteristics:

Economists argue that green economy based industries have the potential to become drivers of future economic growth.

Interestingly, they state that the concept of ‘green economy’ has the capability to reverse the vicious cycle of environmental losses and persistent poverty.

Against this backdrop, the upcoming conference in the beautiful country of Malaysia makes an attempt to achieve the following objectives;

a) Analyze the importance of ‘green economy’ and the benefits it would bring to the mankind;

b) Identify and gauge the major economic benefits it would bring if investments are diverted to green economy and other related areas;

c) Provide an ideal platform for researchers, economists, bankers and practitioners to share their research and practical experiences in all the major issues highlighted on the conference theme; and

d) Offer suitable solutions to ensure an orderly growth of the global economy and bring prosperity and sustainable economic development to the world, with a greater focus on green economy, in the long-run.
