The discipline of marketing has undergone greater transformation over the years. Among various changes, ‘social marketing’ has gained significant influence and help the buyers to achieve their objectives.
Philip Kotler and Andreasen define social marketing as "differing from other areas of marketing only with respect to the objectives of the marketer and his or her organization. Social marketing seeks to influence social behaviors not to benefit the marketer, but to benefit the target audience and the general society." So, these two celebrated authors emphasize that the concept of social marketing helps the end-users to greatly benefit from this essential tool. In the US, this technique has proved to be a re-sounding success, particularly, in the areas of heart diseases and organ donation.
As indicated earlier, social marketing attempts to include everyone in the society. Social Marketing helps to influence behaviors that would benefit not only the individuals but the whole community for its betterment. Again, social marketing is totally guided by ethical principles. Understandably, greater social benefit is the ultimate goal in this great concept of social marketing.
Although the concept of social marketing is primarily used by social marketers, there is, undoubtedly, greater scope available for commercial marketers to make use of this great platform to promote their business objectives effectively.
In this scenario, the upcoming conference in the beautiful city of Hong Kong tries to achieve the following objectives. Among others, the objectives are to:
a) analyze the different approaches that social marketing can follow to help business ventures;
b) share the research interests and findings in different areas of marketing with fellow academicians; and;
c) encourage joint research works in the broader field of marketing with a special focus on social media marketing.
